Captured: Toronto's Built Heritage

This website is a modest attempt to capture examples of Toronto's built heritage that are in decline, that have been reclaimed after a period of neglect, or that have been destroyed. This is admittedly an ambitious project, and one that has been slowly evolving over the past three years. In its previous incarnations, it was known as Local Ruins: Abandoned and Reclaimed Buildings in Toronto. This is very much a work in progress, so please pardon our dust! The categories at the left are a rough taxonomy, and the photographs are not arranged in any particular order at this time, but this will change as the site grows. I have been researching and photographing Toronto's architectural heritage for fun since I moved here from Montreal in 1999. Thanks to Heritage Canada's Young Canada Works program, I had the opportunity to do this professionally as a Research Assistant at the West Toronto Junction Historical Society, during the summer of 2004. The photographs on this site were taken between 2000-2006 with one of the four following cameras. Prior to 2003, I used a Minolta Riva Zoom 90 point-and-shoot camera. In 2003, I acquired a vintage Canon AE-1 35 mm camera. I also had occasional access to an Olympus Camedia C-3000 Zoom digital camera. I acquired an HP Photosmart R607 4.1 MP point and shoot in December 2004. This website was built with Microsoft FrontPage 2000, Microsoft Picture It! Photo Premium 9, and ACD Photo Enhance.
